A. O. Smith.has partnered with the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors (PHCC) Educational Foundation to fund the scholarship since 2004. The A. O. Smith scholarship is offered to students enrolled in a plumbing-heating-cooling related course of study and was created to expand the expertise essential to the HVACR and plumbing industry. Applicants are required to submit a letter of recommendation from a PHCC member in addition to an extensive portfolio of qualifications.
Young studies plumbing, installation, service and repair with the Allentown Master Plumbers Association. She works full-time as an apprentice with Elek Plumbing in Allentown, Penn. Earning the A.O. Smith scholarship, allows her to finish her apprenticeship and pursue an undergraduate degree in business. Once completed, she plains to obtain a master plumbing license and open her own business.
While in high school, Young started working as a co-op student with Elek Plumbing. “Working for Elek provided opportunities to learn different tasks in the field,” she said. “My outstanding performance led to a full-time job with them right after high school.”
